Dana Topousis is interim lead for the Strategic Communications office and oversees UC Davis News and Media Relations. She arrived in 2015, after years of living and working in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area.

In her previous role at the National Science Foundation, Dana and her team launched and expanded a variety of social media platforms, created the agency’s first free iPad app, and developed the agency’s first public communications and media policy.

Although she could point to many career highlights, two relatively recent ones were accompanying journalists to Antarctica and participating in the launch of a $200 million research vessel. She is proud to have served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Kenya, where she worked with a microcredit organization in a small community outside Nairobi.

Dana earned her master’s degree in writing from Johns Hopkins University and her bachelor’s degree in business and communication from the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota.

A Midwesterner by birth, Dana is thrilled to be living and working in Davis, where she aims to grow lemon and pomegranate trees. Her dog, Homer, loves exploring his California yard.

What inspired me to do what I do

I’ve always loved to write, but my undergraduate experience as both the editor of the student newspaper and as an assistant with the college’s public relations department sealed the deal.
