Chris has been tinkering with computers and gadgets since early childhood, taking things apart to see how they worked, and modifying them to make new creations. An inquisitive nature and a lifelong love of writing and reading led to a career in journalism that involved producing content across many different mediums — from newspapers to television and digital content. These dynamic experiences serve as a valuable tool when determining how to tell a particular story to a particular audience.
Prior to joining the office of Strategic Communications, he spent a year getting to know the Davis community as the digital communications specialist in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at UC Davis.
Before UC Davis, Chris worked at the American Institute of Physics in Washington, D.C., where he helped create Inside Science, a news service covering science, technology, engineering, mathematics and related fields. He used his journalistic skills to create news articles, social media, packaged videos, guest columns, and coordinated freelancer assignments.
Chris brings a wide range of experience to the role of social media coordinator. His résumé includes covering the Olympic Games for NBCSports, coordinating broadcast news production for major-market NBC & ABC affiliates, and working as editor of the award-winning university newspaper, The Pine Needle.
After a lifetime in New York, North Carolina, Boston and Washington, D.C., Chris now enjoys the West Coast life in Davis. He shares a home with partner Pamela Reynolds, a UC Davis alumna and postdoctoral researcher investigating the structure and functioning of marine eelgrass ecosystems. They have two awesome rescue dogs and four semi-behaved chickens.
In his spare time, the self-described “Southern-Fried Yankee out West” enjoys photography, hiking, backpacking, skiing, SCUBA diving, cooking and travelling to exotic locations.
What inspires me to do what I do?
My family and friends. There are answers they want to questions that they don't even know to ask. It's my challenge to figure out what those topics are and make them accessible.
Best advice I've received
Always bring a spare change of clothes when reporting on animals, kids and especially marine biologists.
Strangest job I've ever had
Research scuba diver. I'd go diving to collect seaweed and critters, then would use a salad spinner to process it back in the lab. I've never been able to look at a salad the same way.
